About me:

I am a physician-scientist with a career dedicated to infectious diseases, critical care, and translational research, committed to advancing scientific knowledge and improving clinical outcomes globally, with a special focus on Colombia and Latin America.

I currently serve as a Distinguished Professor of Infectious Diseases at the School of Medicine of Universidad de La Sabana, where I also direct the Unisabana Translational Science Center (UCTS), an interdisciplinary center focused on bringing scientific discoveries from the laboratory to clinical practice. I also hold a clinical and academic position at the Universidad de La Sabana Clinic, a university hospital committed to research, education, and high-quality medical care. In parallel, I am a Researcher and Scientific Leadership Manager at the University of Oxford, where I contribute to coordinating international research, capacity building, and scientific leadership in infectious diseases and critical conditions.

I completed a Master’s in International Health and Tropical Medicine at the University of Oxford, and earned a PhD in Translational Sciences from the University of Texas. This academic training has allowed me to develop a broad research agenda, ranging from molecular mechanisms to clinical studies and health systems research.

I have led multiple randomized clinical trials and multicenter observational studies, both in Colombia and in other Latin American countries, as well as within the framework of international collaborative initiatives. I actively participate in research networks such as REMAP-CAP, ANDROMEDA SHOCK, and LIVEN (Latin American Intensive Care Network), where we contribute to the scientific response to pneumonia, sepsis, and other emerging infectious threats.

I have published more than 180 peer-reviewed scientific articles, many of them in high-impact journals, and I supervise a group of master’s and doctoral students working on projects related to pathogen biology, host response, antimicrobial resistance, and long-term sequelae of infectious diseases.

In addition to my research work, I serve as Associate Editor for several international scientific journals, International Advisor for The Lancet Microbe, and External Advisor for the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), supporting the strengthening of clinical research capacities in Latin America and promoting equitable preparedness for future pandemics.

My work is guided by a commitment to scientific excellence, regional impact, and global collaboration. I aim to bridge the gap between research and real-world practice, ensuring that the knowledge generated translates into better care for the populations that need it most, in Latin America and around the world.
